Sport Arbitrage Betting – Betting On The Wrong Event
Betting On The Wrong Event
It may sound stupid but if you are not paying attention it can easily be done. For a premiership game there are many different bet types available other than just the match odds. With so many similar sounding permutations it can be easy to make a mistake when you are trying to place a bet quickly.
It pays to take a few seconds just to go over what you have done before submitting your bet.
Check the team – A common mistake is to get the odds and the team mixed up.
This is probably the easiest and the best check. Get this right and you can’t go far wrong.
Check the bet type – If the description of the bet is different between the bookmakers involved, can you reasonably assume from the words used that they are the same bet? If you are unsure then use the odds as a guide.
Check the odds – Even though you are looking for an arbitrage opportunity, if the odds are very different then you may be looking at the wrong selection. If you are still unsure then do not place the bet.
Two rules of thumb I find extremely useful as a warning sign are:
If it doesn’t look right it probably isn’t.
This term of phrase is a throwback to when I worked in the City, but it still holds true for me today. If the numbers didn’t look right after a few times of looking, I would ask someone else to look at it for me. This is not me being lazy – sometimes it is best for a fresh pair of eyes to look at the problem. Unfortunately in sports arbitrage betting there is often no time to consult a friend. So if it doesn’t look right even after you have checked your numbers, leave it and move on. Trust your intuition.
If it looks too good to be true it probably is.
This is potentially more dangerous than the above as sub-consciously we want the numbers to be true. It takes more will power to walk away from what looks like a very good opportunity than just an average one. Again, learn to trust your intuition. There will always be more opportunities.
If you feel yourself doubting the numbers in front of you then quickly double check them before submitting. If you still have doubts then walk away and wait for the next arb.
